Girdwood is 37 miles south from Anchorage on the Seward Highway. But, the short distance can take 45 minutes or more depending on what weather condition mother nature is dishing out across the arm. This area is more well known for the Alyeska Ski Resort than ice but several areas with vertical ice are known.
Winner Creek lies in the valley just north of the Alyeska Ski Resort. It is easily accessed by a well-marked trail leaving near the tram at the Alyeska Prince Hotel (trail head is marked by a sign). Hike the trail to the fork and turn right heading up river on Winner Creek to find the known route in this area.
