The Little Susitna River originates in the Talkeetna Mountains near the Independence Mine and Hatcher Pass. In the winter, this area can get pretty busy as many people from Anchorage and the Valley converge on the excellent backcountry skiing. Hatcher Pass can see many inches of snow during the winter and the avalanche danger can be something to take very serious. Check out the avalanche danger before getting on some of the climbs in the Little Susitna River drainage.
From Anchorage, drive north about one hour on the Glenn Highway to Palmer. Go through the main lights in town for the Palmer-Wasilla Highway and Arctic Avenue. Proceed north and turn left at the sign for Independence Mine/Hatcher Pass. Proceed on this road for about another 30 minutes until you get into the mountains.
