The drive out to the climbs at the base of Pioneer Peak is almost worth it by itself. The Old Glenn Highway brings one so close to the peak that it almost invites a summit attempt. If one is looking for something a little less committing, the ice brings a welcome alternative.
The approach to the climbs in this area is relatively easy. After leaving Anchorage to the north, drive about 45 minutes past the community of Eklutna. Take the exit for the Old Glenn Highway and turn right heading east along the Knik River. The climbs in this area are several miles up river at the foot of Pioneer Peak.
